Ieva’s Story
Starting with her first job at Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ieva was assigned to a team responsible for brokering Latvia’s accession to NATO. Forging ties with US policymakers and the world’s most eminent security organization, and ensuring that Latvia ticked all the boxes, Ieva gained first-hand experience in the demands of a secure nation and in working with transatlantic partners. Her experience and the professional relationships she built along the way paved the way for a career in national and international security and resilience, and developed a unique sensibility for collaborating with the United States.
As her responsibilities grew, she joined the team organizing the NATO Summit in Riga. While working at NATO in Brussels, she also advised on transatlantic integration and democratic reforms for the team of then-president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, before later being posted to the EU Mission in Baku, Azerbaijan.
After completing a mid-career master’s at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Ieva was entrusted with implementing and setting up the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, which to this day is an authority on disinformation and hybrid warfare. During this same period, she led the development of Latvia’s first national cybersecurity strategy.
Alongside her professional career, Ieva served as First Lady of Estonia, giving her a front-row seat to one of the world’s most rapid national digital transformations. During this period, she was also involved in pro bono work centered on cybersecurity awareness and education for youth.
Ieva later returned to government as an advisor to the President of Latvia on cybersecurity and digital policy. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she has supported Ukraine in an advisory capacity, spending two years leading digital policy work in Kyiv during wartime, and now leads Ukraine’s CISO Campus programme, helping strengthen cybersecurity leadership and capability.
Ieva advised WithSecure on European cybersecurity policy through mid-2026. She has established a cyber education program with Google.org for Riga Technical University, and currently sits on the board of Latvia’s National AI Center. Her skills, network, and knowledge are appreciated by both corporate organizations and nations alike, and she works with both to improve digital resilience capabilities in organizations and their leaders. She also devotes time to educating society through programs run by the Ilvesa Foundation.
